From extremely large elephants to interactive art pieces. I really enjoyed that there were many art piece that one could interact with, it made the experience even that more entertaining.

The extremely large elephant was the first piece that caught my eye. One would be able to see it from a mile away. I believe that the title of the piece was “Life is though, so we pull the wool over our eyes”, but I’m not sure if that was just a quote intended to evoke thought while looking at the piece. The elephant was not only large but pink. Jessie Lieberman, the artist, wanted the piece to evoke a sense of going back to childhood. The large pink elephant is supposed to represent comfort. The sign in front of the elephant told the view to enter the belly of the elephant. As I lowered my head into the belly of the gigantic stuffed animal I felt comfortable and as thought I wanted to take a nap right there, on the pillows and fluff. The light streaming into the cozy compartment was diffused and also comforting. I was impressed by the thought and craftsmanship that Jessie put into her piece. I knew how much work and time she put into it.

After being awed by the work of Jessie I ventured over to “Storage” by Dylan Clark. Here I was also impressed with thought behind the piece. Only someone that knew a little bit about modern art would really understand the irony of this piece. Dylan made replicas of modern sculptures by arts David Smith, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp, and Richard Serra. Then he placed those pieces against a steal rusted plate. The rusted plate represents a storage unit. He states in his artist statement “[...] each work looks new and undamaged to convey the current importance to the modern art world, but they are placed haphazardly to show the potential lack of attention in the future”. I don’t know if I fully agree with Dylan when he states that these pieces are going to lose importance in the future. I believe that some of those works could last as long in importance as the Mona Lisa. Yes, there have been many works forgotten or dismissed but we do not know yet if the pieces that we call modern will disappear with time. I love the accuracy with which he portrayed the modern works. I look as though he pull much time and effort into his idea and execution.

The last things that I looked at while visiting the gallery were two comic book style works, one by Courtney Burns and the other by C. Knight. Courtney’s was anime inspired and had to do with a reinterpretation of the three fates and cutting string to end a life. She made the three fates into a hooded figure and the string into a clock. I thought it was visually interesting how she made large colored images of her story and posted them on the wall with the book there for people to read. C. Knight did a similar thing but he put the whole content of his book on the wall. His book was about zombies taking over. The picture quality of C. Knights story was very good. His use of Photoshop made it look very professional.

The second senior art show was by far the more interesting one. Not to put down the first show, I thought that the senior in that show had equal talent, but as a viewer I definitely had more fun walking through scary mazes, ducking into a shrine, and laying in my childhood fantasies.

Google

The Invention of the first laser.
I really love how google changes their logo every now and then to adjust to what is going on in the present day. The exhibit consists of small scale models of his larger installations. There were a one large scale sculpture there that was a wall fixture, but the models that were sitting on pedestals would have been beyond comparison in size. The museum didn’t house the life size sculpture due to the fact that it wasn’t large enough. Although the pieces were models he provided pictures of his installations which gave more of a perspective to the grandness of his sculptures.

Richard Friedberg is a local artist living just outside of Oneonta, NY in an old Quaker farm. The largeness of the farm allows for him to easily construct his massive sculptures. The Quaker farm however is just his summer home. During the winter he maintains a studio in New York Cities Soho. He was school at Antioch College and then Yale University. After school he moved to New York City to teach the fine arts and make sculptures.

His sculptures are at first overwhelming. By looking at the models one is filled with the sense that the piece is towering them. The pieces are also very busy so the viewer’s eye is constantly moving around the piece. Each sculpture was unique, but he used a common theme throughout his work, flowing lines and organized commotion. All of the pieces created movement and had a great amount of energy. Just by standing next to these small scale models, one would get the impression intended when they are at their full scale.

The pieces also have a majestic quality. His use of color shows grandness or even godliness. His piece, diva, uses the colors gold, white, and sliver which add to it majestic qualities. It also has golden rods shooting out from the top of the piece, almost as if they were rays of sunlight. The piece also contains a pathway. This may have been intended to be the portal to a spiritual world. These were my thoughts when first looking at the piece. Then I thought about the name of the piece, diva. That didn’t really tie in with the rest of the earlier assumptions; unless it was referring to Mary as a diva, or another higher power. This made me think that maybe it was just a diva. A long flowing dressed diva. The grandness actually complimented it just being a diva. Gold shooting from the face and the ego of a diva, thinking they are the almightily.

Richard Friedberg’s pieces evoked many thoughts. I could quite put my foot down of what any of them were intended to mean but I think that might have been what he was going for. Friedberg may have wanted the viewer to find their own meaning in his grand sculptures. I wish that I could have been about the see a life size sculpture of his because the feeling that I get just by looking at one of his models would most likely be amplified immensely.

Tehran, Iran- From A Camera Phone

Visit http://lifegoesonintehran.com it's a website designed by a person to show what is going on in the capital city of Tehran without any propaganda. The country of Iran is being portrayed unfairly in the news and this website shows that it's like on a daily bases there. It allows the people from across the world to see what is going on in this capital city. He/she also designed the website to show his/her friends back in Los Angles that everything was safe and beautiful in Iran. He/she wanted to show this people she thought that people didn't really know what Iran consisted of.

Each of his/her pictures are taken with a camera phone. This adds another element of intrigue to this website. The picture are from a personal perspective. I also love the way that the website is set up. She has the biggest heart that I've ever known. Not only does she have a big heart she also has a big voice, a voice for the people who cannot speak for themselves. When she was younger she would always play with the children that didn't have friends or talk to the person standing alone. With her warm inviting personality it makes her easy to talk to.

Recently she started a group at her high school called Contemplators Anonymous. It’s a group designed to help the people in need. Their latest project was raising money to purchase malaria nets for villages in Africa. She and her fellow Contemplators gained up with my Uncle Russ who frequents Africa. He does to maintain his sister school. He gave Mackenzie the means to help many Africans who would have possibly died from malaria the change to live.

I look up to my little sister. I would have never have thought to have done such a thing at her age. She is truly wise beyond her years with a heart of gold. Now how many big sisters can say that they admire their younger sister and look up to them?

To purchase a net is only five American dollars as opposed to the high cost of medicine needed to cure malaria. To contact Contemplators Anonymous or to donate money just email me at brioc21@yahoo.com. It was indirectly about the population problem in India but focuses primarily on the story of Indian woman. India is trying to decrease the population by offering a number of contraceptives and other methods of birth control including abortion and sterilization. The problem is getting the women to give consent to partake. To an Indian woman children are extremely important. The children take care of them when they’re old and lighten to burden in the fields. Also if a woman is unable to bear a child then the husband can discard her. So the incentive to become sterile is not high.

Indian women are thought as a second class. Women don't want to bear a girl sometimes because it would make their husbans unhappy and would cost the family more money, due to her dowery. It is sad how the Indain society treats it's women. One of the women in the documentary said that there was a servay stating that 30% of the households in India were run by women. She thought that it should be changed to 70%. The men sit playing cards and maybe doing a little bit of work, but for the most part the work around the house and the childcare is done by the woman of the house.

Woman are strong creatures and it is shown universally. The Indian women have to bare most of the work around the house. They also have to endore the pain of childbirth, and now they have to suffer the pain of sterization without being about to show their husband's knowing what pain they are really going through.

As a woman my heart goes out to them. This documentary has moved me and connected me to the women feachered within it. All woman are sisters. We share happiness, sarrow, and pain. This documentary shows the strenght of women. It also shows the need for better hospitals and healthcare in India. It pushes the bounderies of the socail norm. I throughly enjoy watching is social norms of socity being pushed. It was even eye opening to me when the policemen were trying to band "free hugs". Why in soictey is it alright to create war but not to give out free hugs. Thankfully the potion showed that people have different views and enjoy a free hug.
The video itself is a piece of artwork. The creative ways that it starts off in black and white and then when the first hug is iniated it becomes colored. This shows empahsis on a hug bringing color into one's life.
